<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>One promising and innovative approaches to designing mechanical metamaterials for a range of applications is to draw on geometries found in natural structures. Nature offers a wide variety of geometries and structures that have evolved over long periods to serve different functions, including protection. Two such protective structures are the microstructure of pomelo peel and the geometry of carambola fruit, both of which help cushion the fruit against impact when it falls from a height. These structures can serve as prototypes for lightweight, high- strength metamaterials with enhanced energy absorption performance. Additive manufacturing enables the fabrication of such metamaterials with unit-cell geometries of arbitrary complexity. In this study, the microstructure of pomelo peel was used as the reference geometry for metamaterial design. Metamaterial samples comprising 5×5×5 unit cells with a nominal porosity of 80 % were fabricated from VT6 (Ti–6Al–4V) alloy by selective laser melting. Quasi-static and dynamic compression tests were performed to determine the mechanical properties and specific energy absorption of the metamaterials. The ultimate compressive strength of the metamaterial samples was 116 MPa, the yield strength was 102 MPa, and the effective elastic modulus was 6 GPa. Their specific energy absorption was 2.57 J/g under quasi-static compression and 2.71 J/g under dynamic compression. These findings demonstrate the potential nature-inspired design principle for developing energy-absorbing metamaterials and provide a basis for further research and the development of energy-absorbing systems and components.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>cелективное лазерное плавление</kwd><kwd>метаматериалы</kwd><kwd>энергопоглощение</kwd><kwd>природоподобная геометрия</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>selective laser melting</kwd><kwd>metamaterials</kwd><kwd>energy absorption</kwd><kwd>nature-inspired geometry</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group><funding-statement xml:lang="ru">Исследования выполнены при финансовой поддержке Министерства науки и высшего образования РФ (Соглашение № 075-15-2024-562 от 25.04.2024).</funding-statement><funding-statement xml:lang="en">This work was supported of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation (Agreement No. 075-15-2024-562 dated 25 April 2024).</funding-statement></funding-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Bekele A., Wadee M.A., Phillips A.T.M.
